“I can’t seem to sit down and write.”

You have a job to do, an article to write, a page to create for a marketing client. But you just can’t get yourself seated into your soft, comfortable, cushy office chair on which you spent hundreds of dollars.

Excuse or reason?

Oh, do I sympathize with what you are going through! There have been several times where I have been unable to write. The words are swirling and twirling in my mind, and yet, feel stuck and frozen to move, much less set my butt down to get them out.

As recent as a few months ago, I was absolutely catatonic when it came to writing. A big project was due with a deadline looming. Granted, I set down the time schedule, but regardless, I needed to be current with my deliverables.

There are many factors when writing becomes this huge rock that can’t be moved. The factors are as individual as you are.

  • You are tired
  • “This” needs to get done first
  • Favorite show is on television
  • Your kids are fighting
  • Your spouse is making a fuss
  • You don’t like your client
  • You don’t like your client’s message
  • Your plant died
  • You’ve had too much wine
  • You are feeling depressed
  • You are depressed

Although these can be legitimate excuses for not getting the writing done, there is an underlying reason the brakes are applied. You just have to figure out the root cause.

Easier said than done.

What you can do.

Do you know of a parent who threw one of their children into a lake to teach them how to swim? Perhaps you were the child. Perhaps you were the parent! However, where writing is concerned, and with any task you feel forced to do, the “sink or swim” method, although, which can be helpful, is not recommended.

What I do suggest, however, is to:

  • Give yourself the benefit of the doubt
  • Acknowledge your feelings
  • Free-write in a journal
  • Meditate
  • Ask for spiritual guidance
  • Surrender to a higher power
  • Honor the work that you do complete

Add to this list as you see fit. I used all these to gain back the “wont to write.. But there was something else that worked, too, and in conjunction with the methods listed above.

The solution.

You can spend a lot of time in discovery. But you may not have that much time to spare. You need to get your writing work done NOW!

The key is the more often you write the better habit you develop. Notice that I did NOT say, “the MORE you write!”

For only minutes—not hours but MINUTES—each day you can ACHIEVE the goal set for yourself with WRITING your CONTENT!

How do I know this? Because I’ve been doing this process and now am able to…
